On the 28^{th of} February, together with H&H Lawyers, AJS NSW held an event entitled Cross-border inheritance between Australia and Japan. This talk, given by solicitor Dai Ueda, was followed by an enjoyable networking reception hosted by H&H.

Dai’s presentation detailed numerous important features and issues regarding cross-border inheritance by sharing his experience in dealing with such succession matters over his career. To summarize, the many differences between the two countries, including definitions of the Estate and Executor, the role of lawyers, the use of family registers (戸籍), the importance of the will and tax laws as well as the law of intestacy, were thoroughly explained. This provided the audience with valuable detail about how succession matters can be effectively handled. The information emphasised the importance of careful and early planning in cross-border estate management.

At the end of his speech, Dai opened the room to a Q&A session, in which legislative issues regarding inheritance between Australia and Japan were further discussed. Throughout the event the example of an Australian living and then dying in Japan or vice versa, with assets in both countries, was used to illustrate how respective inheritance laws apply to different personal situations.
