President's message
At AJS-NSW, 2024 has started with a bang and the next few months look busy with a diverse range of events planned.
The Shinnenkai (New Year Event) saw more than 40 members attend a casual dinner Izakaya-style at Nakano Darling in Haymarket. Three lucky members won prizes by completing a human bingo game. Photos of the event are available on our website here.
Coming up we are co-hosting a facilitated International Women’s Day talk and networking with the Australia Japan Businesswomen’s Network (AJBWN), with VIP speakers. The discussion will include personal experiences, insights, and anecdotes from the Japanese female speakers, providing valuable insights into navigating the Australia-Japan business sphere. The following week on March 13, our speaker will be Rurika Imahashi, Sydney Bureau Chief for Nikkei Inc. Imahashi-san reports on Australia, NZ and the Pacific for business readers in Japan and Asia; she will speak about what Japanese businesspeople want to know about Australia. The event will be held at the Canva Event Space in Surry Hills near Central and there will be plenty of time to engage with Imahashi-san and fellow members over drinks after the talk. Sign up here.
Our next Shaberanaito (Japanese-speaking evening) will be held on Friday March 22. This event, co-hosted with JETAA, is always popular, so sign up quickly as seats are limited. Again we will have delicious food prepared by Izakaya Masuya, and the price includes one drink.
May 14 is the date set for our Student Awards, one of our annual signature events. More details will be available in due course. AJS-NSW presents awards to outstanding students of Japanese Studies nominated by the seven universities in the Sydney region, and the event is always a highlight for their teachers, families and friends, as well as all those who support the teaching of Japanese language and studies in NSW.
