Thirst Exhibition curator talk

Contemporary Asian Craftmanship & Cultural Exchange

In advance of the Thirst Exhibition of contemporary crafts and ceramics, curator Marge Hwang, founder of Overdue Studio, will give a talk introducing contemporary Asian craftsmanship.

She will showcase one of the exhibition's 15 ceramicists, Ricca Okano, and discuss her work in some depth. She will then introduce Wendy Lin, a Japanese tea master, to talk about the importance of handcrafted teaware in the tea ceremony. This will be followed by Yoko Kawada, talking about the history of Kintsugi (the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold/silver dusted lacquer).

This will be an online Zoom talk, free to attend.

The Thirst Exhibition is part of the Sydney Design Week and will be held at Between Lines in Newtown, from 17th September. The group exhibition will feature 100 unique handcrafted wares by contemporary ceramicists from Japan, Taiwan and Korea. The curator says, "the re-emergence of this ancient art is a natural response to our single-use, throw-away culture, and we have a thirst for change."
